You’ll have the choice of personal or vehicle cover, and if the policy is just for you in one car then vehicle cover should be fine. However, if you’re likely to drive different vehicles, or are regularly a passenger in another car, then personal cover is ideal.
Choosing personal cover means that you’ll take your breakdown assistance, and it won’t matter which car you’re in.
You’ll usually pay more for personal cover as it’s more comprehensive, but it’s worth it if it suits your circumstances.
As for the actual level of cover, it depends on your budget, and how many benefits you want to include. The cheapest option gives you essential reassurance that a roadside fix will be attempted by a specialist, but if you want cover from outside your home then the next one up would be better.
The next level of cover brings in national recovery, which is always a popular option. If your vehicle cannot be fixed then you, your car and up to 8 passengers can be transported to a UK destination of your choosing.
With this, there’s also the option of a courtesy car, hotel accommodation or alternative transport. However, breakdown cover outside your home is not included, which brings down the price.
The final level of cover offers the complete package, with roadside assistance, national recovery, home rescue and replacement transport/hotel accommodation. It’s the most comprehensive cover from RAC, with the selection of optional Breakdown Extras available as an add-on.
