RAC to offer multi-fit spare wheel
Recombu reports that the 17-inch alloy multi-fit wheel, which was designed by Dynomec, will fit “the majority” of cars on the road, and RAC patrols will offer to fit the wheel on a customer’s vehicle.
Whilst inflation kits are convenient and commonplace, they are not able to fix every puncture or blow-out. Despite this, many drivers with a kit will take to the road without a spare wheel.
In the year prior to August 2012, RAC recorded 87,000 breakdowns which involved a puncture on a car without a replacement tyre on board, and the number rose to around 120,000 in the subsequent 12 months.
RAC technical operations head Phil Ryan said: “The Dynomec universal spare wheel demonstrates how the RAC is at the forefront of providing innovative solutions to help our individual members and business customers get back on the road as quickly as possible after they break down.
“We understand why motor manufacturers need to reduce the weight of their vehicles in order to make them more fuel efficient and to meet EU carbon dioxide emissions targets and removal of the spare wheel helps them to achieve this.
“Drivers should not suffer as a result, and in order to minimise the disruption and inconvenience that punctures can cause, the universal spare wheel provides additional options for patrols to deal with breakdowns more quickly and effectively.”
The multi-fit tyre would only be temporary, with RAC retrieving it from ATC once a replacement has been fitted.
RAC saw effective testing back in 2009, when the breakdown cover provider trialled the wheel over 6 months, and found it could save customers thousands of hours of waiting time.
